Villa Sombrero

A Mexican Restaurant

Established in the late 1970s, Villa Sombrero is one of the long-standing Mexican restaurants in Highland Park, owned by Manuel Salazar and his family. Despite its popularity, Villa Sombrero is one of the many businesses in Highland Park that has been directly affected by gentrification. In 2007, the landowner decided not to renew Salazar’s lease for the building, and the restaurant came to a close. The landowner then transformed the interior of the restaurant to attract the new, hip, and predominantly white residents of Highland Park. Villa Sombrero’s name was changed to “Felipe’s” and along with the renovation came a completely new menu and increase in prices. However, not very many people were willing to pay the prices, and Felipe’s closed down in the fall of 2008. Manuel Salazar, the owner of Villa Sombrero, took this opportunity to sign a new lease and reopen Villa Sombrero. He brought back the old interior of the original restaurant and business prospered, just like it had in the years prior to closing for the first time.
